I'll give you three guesses what Zach's news is. Here is your only clue...................he's developmentally ahead. Now guess! I'm guessing some of you will actually try to guess and most won't. But even if you do guess you're probably not wrong. He's ahead or on schedule in basically everything developmentally. I don't know about if his drawing is where it should be and I know he struggles with letter identification and writing, but with everything else he's average or advanced developmentally. When I ask his teachers about his skills they reassure me he's average or above average.
I know there are some parents that are so focused on their children being advanced they respond in at least one of the following ways when there is even one area of weakness:
1. Denial about their child's average or below average development
2. Disappointment in it followed by a perfectionist attitude that causes Depression in a child who never feels good enough
We take the mentality that as long as he's mostly where he's supposed to be developmentally, we're happy. I understand and work with him on the things he's a little behind in but I make sure he understands that we love him for who he is and are proud of his strengths. I think that's how most parents feel about their kid's development. We were always like that. I don't care what height or weight percentile he's in, I only care that he's well proportioned. Well proportioned means healthy and that's what matters most. Everyone has things they aren't good at and things they are.
But this isn't about skills. It's a developmental milestone. He has at least one other impressively early developmental milestone. He was fully potty trained at 26 months (2 years 2 months). It would have been sooner but I was on crutches with a broken foot for six weeks and that held back our ability to do it. I did a blog post on how we did it (Potty Training 101). That was anticipated since there were early signs that it's something he was interested in.

He has a few loose teeth AND his 6 year molars are starting to come it. Most kids don't start loosing their teeth until they are closer to six years old but Zach got his first two teeth just before he turned 3 months old. They always came in in pairs. The front two are pretty loose and the Dentist says it will probably be in the next month or two that he looses them. The two next to those are a little loose but it will still be a while. We thought back to see if there were any falls that may have led to the loose teeth and couldn't think of any. The molars are a surprise though. The Dentist says those are coming in in the next 6 months. His only concern was that his current molars are a little close together. That's inherited from me. I had to have all my wisdom teeth out plus four others pulled out. One tooth was on it's side and I was getting braces. Out of the 8 removed, 5 came out for braces. The remaining 3 wisdom teeth came out a few years later. When I heard about his tight molars I knew it meant he'll probably also need braces when he's older. It's too soon to tell.
Josh and I already are starting to plan what that Tooth Fairy will bring and we started to talk to Zach about what will be happening with his loose teeth. A Dentist visits his school each year in February for Dental Health Month but it's different when it happens and isn't just an abstract thing. He started talking about a girl at camp who lost a tooth this Summer. You just never know when a developmental milestone with happen early. The good news is the Dentist didn't seem concerned about it since he did get teeth early. It's unclear how early since he was 3 months when they broke the gums but was teething before. As new parents with a first child "teething" isn't what comes to mind with a three month old. We weren't looking for any. When they broke the gums, it explained a lot. We knew he's start loosing his teeth early we just didn't expect it would be this soon. It may have been unexpected news..........for now............but he's healthy and that's what's most important. It does make me wonder what other developmental milestones he'll surprise us with early.
