Potty Training 101

Zach is slow to transition with the big things. With the bottle we had to slowly introduce snacks in replacement. When it came to the last bottle, we had introduced a bedtime snack and routine and had started reading books to him (first the snack was introduced and when he adjusted we added the books). He loves books though so by the time he was done, he didn't mind.

He's showing a lot of signs of potty training readiness. He can't keep himself away from the adult toilet, or stop touching toilet paper, he runs into the bathroom sometimes when he needs a new diaper or pats his winkie, he sits on the potty (backwards). Yesterday I said I had to go potty so he brought me his. He just doesn't like sitting on it with his pants down.

Thus our transition plan. He's still in diapers but after the old diaper is off and he's wiped we put him on the potty for as long as he'll stay there. When he stands up we put the fresh diaper on and his pants. We do this with every changing. He's definitely making the connection between potty and diaper. Yesterday he took a diaper off of his shelf and put it in the adult potty. That wasn't fun to clean up. Throughout the day I explain "a tingle in your winkie means you have to pee pee, a lump in your butt mean you have to poopy". It'll take time for him to connect that but repetition is key. He'll get a sticker if he actually does go in the potty. When he fills the chart, he gets a toy.

Yes that's him next to the potty. See the hand?
Actually, while I typed this post apparently he was taking the diapers out of his diaper pail and stacking them into the adult toilet. This is the type of thing that made his doctor say he's ready for potty training. Adventures in Parenting.

Talk about MISCHIEVOUS!!!
