The Nets and Deron Williams

I've noticed a popular older post recently is the post where I might be responsible for the Nets stopping the Carmelo Anthony trade. It's popularity rose around the time Deron Williams was aquired for basically the same assets. What do I think of that?

My objection to giving all that up for 'Melo was that 'Melo very much didn't want to be here and wasn't subtle about that. Deron Williams was initially shocked but he doesn't seem angry or disappointed to be here. I'm all for this trade.

Deron Williams will be a strong recruit piece for us, helping to build a strong team quickly and has said he's excited about helping with recruiting. I won't believe he's serious until he signs an extention and, more importantly, buys a house big enough for his entire family here. He has four kids now. A home purchase for a family is not something you make just temporary.

We have won with him now and with him watching us at home holding his newborn son contemplating the future. Of course he's not going to sign an extension, or think about it, until after a new Collective Bargaining Agreement has been reached. He needs to see the new rules first. In the meantime, he's watching the fans and teammates and looks comfortable.

His smile at his introductory press conference was real, not a PR real but actual happiness. He has a lot of control and power here and likes it. He's getting comfortable with the plays and his teammates and seems genuinely happy to be here. His journey here started with a lot of travel and little sleep and practice but he's had time to settle.

I do think he will remain a Net beyond this contract. I do think, in time, he'll own a house and his family will reside near Brooklyn. I do feel like he'll be able to bring in strong talent by helping show that "The Nets" is not "The Black Hole". I can tell he's dedicated to us by watching him on the court. He's worth what we gave up, 'Melo wasn't.
