A Long Walk To Kohls

Zach is heavy. That's been documented and experienced by some of you. Until a few days ago, he hated holding hands while walking so that meant we had to carry him through streets and parking lots. What happened a few days ago? We crossed the street to my parent's house, holding hands, and he was perfect about it!!!

As you can guess by our local (for those not experiencing it too) it's very snowy. Today it's sunny but icy. That's due to the slush/melting snow that has happened the last few days. Actually, we signed up for a gym class at the Y and didn't go Tuesday because of the icy/freezing rain. It hasn't been fun to carry him in at nap time. The ice in our apartment complex is getting harder to avoid and the Super is running out of places to put new snow. When I called yesterday about the state of the walkway he was out getting salt since we had run out. Zach has gotten good at walking on ice without falling and knowing where to step in these conditions.

Do you like my new haircut?
Thus our trip to Kohls. Other then his haircut at my parent's yesterday (Pop's the Barber) he hasn't gotten out the week since Monday morning. It was time to get out at a non-nap time. I said, "Do you want to go to Kohls?" and he said "Kohls" clearly a few times excitedly. When we got to Kohls, while in the parking lot, I was thinking about my back pain and expensive back surgery and decided to see if the hand holding thing works there too, not just on a very slow street. IT WORKED!!! He walked slowly, tentatively, but held on the entire time. A friend who works there (we have a lot of friends that work there) commented on how adorable he looked. He wandered the store even trying on women's sun glasses and walking with them on then it was time to go. THAT's when the tantrums started. He calmed down quickly all three times on his own. Instead of carrying him when I was ready to go, I made him walk. He suggested a compromise of my carrying him part of the way. Sure enough, the was back to the car was the same, slow and tentative but holding hands with Mommy. I could get used to this.
