It seems like most of the articles I read use the word "poll". Yes, most of what I read is political. But, I read about a variety of topics. I think I saw the word "poll" in an article on the NY Giants today. My two main sources for news are The Washington Post and The Star Ledger (NJ.com). The Star Ledger is a high quality, bipartisan, New Jersey paper that I ready for NJ based news. Fact-based sources like these us data. Data sometimes collected through polls.
Seeing the word "polls" so much makes me think. I don't know if I have ever been polled. I'm one of the prized suburban housewives. But, I am also in one of the bluest states in the nation. I think Biden might wave in our direction when he's in Pennsylvania. But, he can feel safe that New Jersey has his back.
How can I NOT know if I have participated in a poll? Isn't that something you would know? For most people, yes. For me, it's complicated. I decided back in the spring that I was tired of all of these scam calls from numbers I don't recognize and would do something to make it fun for me.
Why is the "energy company" apologizing all the time? Okay, trick question, who supplies my energy? No, Jose is not here. I know I might "do" for donating to the police. That "officer" sure sounds like an actual robot! But, real police know better about security then to ask for donations over the phone. I hang up on all recorded messages when recordings start. Then, I block that number.
So, what did I do in the spring to make it fun? I started answering the phone "Vote for Biden" if I don't recognize the number. To be fair, if I know someone might call from a number not in my contacts, I either warn them first, or check the number location. It was interesting when I told a school administrator in an email to "use the board of education number because I answer unknown numbers "Vote for Biden". He called from his house phone. His choice, he knew it was coming. He either is a Biden supported that wanted to hear it. Or, was curious about if I was serious. I did indeed answer "Vote for Biden".
Funny things happen when I answer "Vote for Biden". Those recorded messages take longer to respond. Remember, they are programed to start doing their thing to the command word "hello" or "hi". They literally don't know what to do with "Vote for Biden". Curiously, especially lately, I get hung up on for answering "Vote for Biden". Sometimes it takes a little bit, sometimes it happens right away.
Are those hang ups polls? Maybe. The poll taker doesn't have to say a word. They have their answer. Campaign? News source? it doesn't matter. They know that this suburban housewife is a Biden chick. Trump's campaign isn't winning over someone answering the phone "Vote for Bide". I guess they are the instant hang ups. I'm on Biden's contacts so I doubt it's his campaign. Perhaps some of those longer hang ups are pollsters for news sources trying to decide on asking follow-up questions then deciding they have their answer. No one is telling me it's a poll so I just don't know.
Half of me takes the polls seriously half of me doesn't. The poll I do take seriously is the one based on the electoral college. That one currently has Biden with a nice estimated electoral college lead. In the actual end, that's the only one that matters. Yes, I am fully supportive of eliminating the electoral college. I always thought it was ridiculous to begin with. Long before Trump won in 2016.
It's the kind of thing I do. Is it considered normal? Nope. Not at all. But, I doubt there is much that I ever do or say that is normal. I'm quirky. Most people just smile, no judgement. A rare few do stare at me like I am a freak show. That's their problem not mine. Either way, "Vote for Biden!"
