Zach's Weird School

Zach's actual school is quite normal. That title refers to a series of series of books that Zach is officially obsessed with!

They are written by Dan Gutman. They are about AJ who goes to Ella Mentary School. The books are about how the adults are all weird, loopy, nutty, and..............well................anything else along those lines. They all start with the second grade teacher, Miss. Daisy, who is crazy. That doesn't compare to their third grade teacher, Mr. Granite, who's actually from the planet Etinarg. That's Granite spelt backwards.

It actually all started with a different book series by a different author. Zach likes some of the books from The Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne. We got him a few for Christmas. While I was in Barnes and Nobles, I decided to get him Officer Spence Makes No Sense. It seemed like the type of humor he likes. I decided to get him one to try. He wanted it early about a month ago. I don't say "no" to books as early gifts! He laughed through the entire thing and asked for more books. Then he asked me to keep reading chapter four, the one with the lie detector test. Now he is addicted!

Zach will ask us to read an entire book in one sitting. Yesterday, this happened twice! The only break being to do homework! Here is the best part, he's reading part of them too! He wants to be able to read them to himself. He has a long way to go before that. But, any motivation is a good thing! He's looking through them as I write this.

Personally, I am very much enjoying these books too! They are adult friendly without anything inappropriate! Zach connects with AJ and his friends. He can't imagine having a school like that! Take the book Miss Mary is Scary. She's the Principal's daughter and a student teacher in AJ's class. Mary had a boyfriend that keeps climbing through the window whenever Mr. Granite is trying to do the same math lesson. It's funny as you read it.

Dan Gutman lives in New Jersey. Zach's school librarian told me he came for an Author's visit two years ago. We JUST missed him! Maybe he'll come back again before Zach leaves elementary school. He's a wonderful writer. Among his other books is a series called The Genius Files for older kids. I see them in the book return box at school all the time! When I put books on top of the shelves to display I always include Weird School and The Genius Files books in multiple places. They are just so popular! When Zach is older I know he will be drawn to them!

Every parent knows this feeling. Your child finds a series of chapter books or a favorite author. You find yourself trying to get them as much access to as many of those books as possible! Because a love of reading is a good thing. Reading time is very different when your child has a favorite author or series. Mark Teague is another favorite of Zach's.

All of these books can be found on Amazon.com. Bookstores sell them but don't keep all of them in stock. Clearly, they don't know what's good for them! The yellow highlight are the books that Zach has. Spoiler alert, Josh's Mom got him the box set for the entire Weird School Daze series for Christmas.
