Zach's three. That means toy shopping is different then it used to be. It used to be easier to complete toy collections because they usually were either in the same package or next to each other. I miss those days.
The three collections he is into most at the moment are Trashies, Hot Wheels, and Transformers Rescue bots. If he's been good and we have change I buy him one but not all the time. He doesn't have the "I want" syndrome because we take that approach. When he does the rare "I want" he's always told "no" All of these you can get at Target.
My mom got the trashies as a freebie to blog about as a product review. I didn't like them at first (he was like 1 1/2 - 2) but I'm picking my battles and saying "okay". They are garbage cans with little disgusting things in them like a yucky toilet. Meant for ages 5 and up. You can't tell what's in the trash can until you open it. They come in a large variety. He doesn't want to collect all of them but likes getting a pack of five. They are about $6 after tax. He has a collection at her house and here.
We used to have a neighbor that Josh had a deal with. Josh would bring him free samples of Buffalo Mozzarella from work (the ones that are in the sample cage and allowed to be taken) and Angelo gave him stuff like Yankee t-shirts from his e-bay business. Angelo's son is 10 and outgrew the Hot Wheels so he gave them to Zach. Zach loves them. I talked about this with Zach's birthday because when Josh's mom discovered he loves hot wheels it inspired the really cool hot wheel cake she made. They are only $1 at Target so they are easy to afford. The hard part is remembering the ones he has already. He doesn't care if he gets a duplicate. He has some in the house and some in the garage. The best was to get him to walk a lap of Cumberland, a street nearby that takes me 15 minutes to do but 30 with Zach, is to say that after we'll stop on the way home and he can play in the garage.
But onto a parent's nemesis. The collection that seemingly can't be completed and of course that's what the kid wants most. Transformers Rescue Bots were another free sample my mom got to blog about. She got Bumblebee and Optimus Prime. Those are the only two I can find in stores. I had to order Heatwave, the firetruck, from someplace else. We are on the lookout for Chase the police bot, Boulder the construction bot, and Blades the helicopter bot. I check the website we got Heatwave from daily.
They carry them in Target but haven't gotten any in a while. Target's records say they aren't discontinued so they should be getting more in at some point. I called Hasbro, the company that makes them, and they said those are the most popular and were released together. It's a marketing ploy, release rarely and limitedly and it increases the value. These bots are the $12.99 series. There is a $6 series that are in the stores (Toys R Us and Target mostly), the complete series of that size. If you wanted a complete set go for the $6 set. But of course the free samples my mom got were from the impossible to find set.
Don't think they will be around in December because my business backround and observant customer background tell me that they will only hit target twice, sometime in late September/early October and early November. Right before the holiday sales so they can get full price for them since people won't wait for them to go on sale (at least not the people who actually are able to purchase them) knowing they get such a small quantity so rarely.
If you doubt Zach's OCD just spend the day with him. All he talks about is Rescue bots. I finally reclaimed my computer to write this. We have one computer. On Demand only has one or two episodes of Rescue bots and they are only on Saturdays at 12 and 12:30 on the Hub. They have only had one season and it looks like it might come out October 1st to buy. They have a video coming out called "Roll to the Rescue" but it's unclear if that's the full season. Another necessary purchase for sanity sake. You Tube has become our best friend. Below is the link to the first episode. For the record, yes, Josh has shared his Transformers TV show with Zach, and becomes a kid when Transformers are on. I have indeed become "that mom" and know WAYYY more about this stuff then probably necessary.
