Cookie Baking Day

Kid's like to help with making Christmas Cookies. This is another example of my habit of stating the obvious. I myself have an interesting story from when I was 3. We were making the cookies, my Mom and me, and the phone rang. It was her Doctor she was pregnant with my brother. We tell that story every year. For Uncle Hugh it's his favorite and least favorite story all wrapped into one (with a read and green bow on it).

I was 3 1/4 at the time. This year I joked that there won't be pregnancy news but the truth is I was 3 let's see what happens when Zach's 3. Again, probably not I just had to say that to make my mother nervous. I take pride in all the complexes I created in her. The big one being her obsession in seeing little boys like my brother and Zach eat since they can sure eat a lot. That's because even as a newborn she had to keep a journal on my eating just to make sure I got the minimum required to survive. My Pediatrician is Zach's and even HE brings that up sometimes STILL!!! Anyone who follows this blog knows the complexes she's created in me so it's only fair.

Back to cookies, and a little boy who wore his Uncle's apron and when he sat next to a picture of 2 or 3 year old Uncle Hugh in that apron looked like the same kid. Zach helps make the pancakes on Sundays. He loves to mix and sneak a blueberry and pour everything into the bowl. This was his first year helping and all week I heard "bakin' Cookies with Grandma" (until we got there then he said "open the garage" my response "trust me you'll have way more fun with this then in the garage). The plan was to make our very popular chocolate chip cookies. It's basically Nestle Toll House cookies but we add chopped Maraschino cherries and extra cherry juice. We were also going to make sugar cookies, a Grandma idea (it's simple and it makes you happy but don't expect Zach to enjoy it as much as you think he will).

First he helped Pop chop cherries. Yes he used a knife, yes I was nervous but my Dad was right there and everything is okay (his trick is to use a latex glove so the juice doesn't make your hands red). Then he helped me scoop them onto the tray (he mixed I scooped). This is a funny part. Every year my Dad says "go easy on the chocolate chips" and every year my mom adds extras right before scooping onto the tray out of my Dad's sight. Then Mom, Me, and Zach all snuck a couple.

After that, he helped Grandma mix the dry mix with the butter and sugar. He helped cut the butter. He loves mixing. He got to eat two cookies. While on the second batch we talked about how after the sugar cookie batch we'll have lunch and maybe do more chocolate chips.

Mom had gotten a tree and a star cookie cutters just for this. She loves the sugar cookies but hardly anyone eats them and as a kid I personally felt like Zach apparently did, after 2 minutes time to move on. He liked the rolling pin and the star cut out (because Mommy has star tea candle holders for decorations with our advent wreath on the table) but wasn't that interested in more then rolling until I mentioned the angel cutter that used to be my favorite. We have a lot of Angel decorations because they are my favorite and Angel is a nickname I have for him. That renewed his interest another minute then he kept asking about the chocolate chip cookies. Sorry mom a new generation of "only doing this to make you happy". It was similar to what we made as kids but a new recipe from online that required frosting. She added frosting, the gel left over from Zach's birthday cake for the wording not the frosting that was supposed to go on it. It sticks to the napkin in the tins. Really Mom let's skip this one in the future.

After lunch the first thing Zach said was "More cookie bakin'" because he knows what kind of cookies we were going to make after lunch and he loves mixing. We were really done though so time to eat. He had one more post nap cookie (a sugar one, he looked disappointed that that was the one I gave him) but we took a long walk after dinner to help exercise it off. Yes I had cookies too but not today.
