Garden Brain (Edited 1/9/13)

Lately, I have been missing my garden. I doubt regular readers are surprised by that sentence. I even thought about taking a Botany class but don't have the money for it. I'm still working on my binders. The three 2in binders are for general research. As of today, my 1in binder is for my garden layout, my plants, my Mom's plants, and plants I have seen on walks that have stuck out to me for one reason or another. I go on http://www.garden.org and in the plant finder section look for specific plants I have seen and try to figure out not just the common name but the botanical name too. I have always wondered about the name of the thorn bushes sometimes used as hedging. It's a Barberry Bush. It turns out there is a good chance that tree that is making Fall so breathtaking is probably a Maple even if the leaves aren't what we classically think of as Maple leaves. I wasn't letting myself think about the garden while waiting for three weeks for Paula to get back to me about if she would be okay with Winter Pansies.

I felt like she should have been more courteous knowing it was so important to me especially after I was so quick to remove the Christmas decorations from the stairs since that was so important to her. I'm all about fairness. If you expect me to be respectful of you and your wishes you better be respectful of mine! Her issue is with too many decorations, not flowers, and we already agreed on Spring Pansies. I wasn't surprised she said "yes". Below is the Spring Pansy. The real difference is that the Winter Pansy has a wider head.

My Mom also decided I can have a small section of her garden to plant whatever I want. I had gotten her Daisies this past year because of all she does for us and I thought they were pretty. Since they didn't take up too much of her garden, and I do a lot from May - October to care for their yard, she has decided that small space is mine. Originally, I was planning on Inpatiens since they are so popular in this area, but, this garden space is too sunny for them. I can't wait to see what they have in April! Something else Garden to be excited over.

After some reflection I realized that I wanted the Impatiens for her, not me. Then I explored why. She used to have Impatiens next to the house in a shady spot but this year there were no Impatiens just Lobelias. Lobelias are pretty but they didn't work out there, in my opinion. I hope she gets Impatiens to put somewhere around the house. I'm sentimental and maybe that's why I feel this way. I won't force them on her but I did tell her I was thinking about Impatiens for that garden spot but it is too sunny. She likes Impatiens so she might get some this year. My go-to for that spot will be Daisies again but we'll see what the options are.

I have settled on a Garden Layout now that I know about the Winter Pansies. It's nature so some of these might not be used and something surprising might happen. I don't plan on Hyacinths in Winter but the buds are slowly getting bigger (no flower yet). I won't write that into the plan because that didn't happen last year and last year was a similar temperature range. I don't see other bulb buds either so this is still suspicious. The layouts have two purposes. The first is so I can visualize what the garden will look like and remember what I liked. I used the empty flowerpots to make sure it fits too. It's just a reference for the future but can't be predictable. Other then the Hyacinths coming early, for example, the Marigolds in the white pots (window pots) might last longer then the ones in the regular 12" pots so I might not use Fall layout four. The second purpose is just to look at and remember how pretty it looks now that it's Winter. Remember, The bottom is the front of the garden.
