Dress For The Game

Zach has made the fall baseball travel team. Remembering April, I decided to make a baseball version of my "dress for the weather" charts. After watching his long and cold practice today, I added some notes to my "dress for the weather" chart too.

Here's the backstory. Yes, this is an OCD thing. It's one example of why I am diagnosed with OCD. Many years ago, I made a chart on what I should wear in certain weather temperature ranges. I made charts for Josh and Zach too because they have different comfort ranges then me. In it, I added notes for various circumstances. I do modify it as needed. That is the beauty of excel!

April was an unusually cold month here. It was a very cold baseball month! Zach wears thermal shirts under his uniform. As of now, he wears four. Two of them are Tek Gear thermal shirts and the other two are Columbia brand base layer shirts with omni-heat. Omni-heat is designed to keep the heat in. Link below and I strongly recommend for outdoor athletes!

He had three long sleeve shirts in the spring. But, after April, I didn't take chances and went for the fourth when he grew out of the old shirts and I had to get new ones anyway. When he is on the bench he can use a wrap and a coat. However, he needs to be as warm as possible for baseball even in the 30s!

It's an interesting modification I didn't think of. The original charts are very thorough. Why didn't they work for games when it was cold? Even the chart for me wasn't right. It's the one factor I didn't think of. The games are longer and I am not active while watching. In Zach's case, of course he was cold he should have been wearing a coat and couldn't on the field! How can we make him as warm as possible without wearing too much? We don't want him to overdress either.

I used to watch games from my warm living room and think "how are players playing and fans in the stands out in this?!" But, that is part of outdoor sports. Adjusting to simply being cold sometimes. It's about the game. Baseball isn't the only outdoor sport where fans have to bundle more then usual and players have to layer up and get creative! .

Any fan or athlete of outdoor sports has some way to decide what to wear for the game. Some way to decide how many layers. I doubt anyone else is as thorough as I am. But, thought does go into it. At least, sometimes.
